Travel Tumult: Canadian Return Trips to U.S. Drop 26% in October

According to data supplied by Statistics Canada, Canadian travel to the United States has been declining for almost a year. This pattern dates back to the beginning of a trade war between the two nations and remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding welcome Canada as America's 51st state.

As a result, there is undoubtedly a great deal of resentment among Canadians. Statistics Canada reports that there were 2.3 million return journeys from the United States in October, a 26.3% decrease from the previous year.

Residents of the United States traveled to Canada 3% more frequently (1.8 million trips, or 76.8% of all non-resident journeys to Canada). That ended an eight-month pattern of decreases from the previous year.

More than 26% Decrease in October

That 2.3 million figure still represented 70.1% of all Canadian citizens' overseas travels during the month.

Compared to the same month last year, there were 685,100 fewer air return flights from the United States for Canadian citizens in October, a 15.1% decline. In October, there were 1.6 million fewer car trips from Canada to the United States, a 30.2% decrease. Sixty-seven percent of these trips took place on the same day.

More Canadians are visiting places outside of the United States, such as Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa, and the Americas. According to Statcan, Canadian travel to foreign locations rose by 9.1% in October.

2026 Seems Bleak

According to a November Angus Reid survey, 70% of Canadians said they would find it difficult to visit the United States this winter, and two-thirds (65%) call the new border restrictions for long-term visitors—which include fingerprinting and a $60 registration fee—"invasive."

This year, compared to previous years, 77% of Canadians say they have a worse opinion of the United States as a tourism destination.

When asked about their travel plans for 2026, 62% of over 1,000 adult Canadians surveyed by Flight Center stated they were less likely to visit the United States than in prior years. The research was carried out in November.
